A condition that causes recurrent pain in the front of the ankle, particularly when flexing up.
Causes
This is caused by repetitive overuse, trauma and/or degeneration.
Typically, it affects young active people. Sports is a very common cause of ankle impingement. Dancers, soccer players and football players are frequently affected.
Symptoms
Pain in the front of the ankle is very common. Also, the pain is worsened when flexing the ankle up. People may have swelling and limited motion.
Diagnosis
An experienced sports medicine doctor or orthopedic surgeon will do a thorough physical exam and likely order X-rays and an MRI to confirm.
Treatment
Initially conservative treatment may be helpful which includes physical therapy, bracing or even an injection.
If conservative treatment does not help then a minimally invasive ankle arthroscopic procedure can often resolve the problem.
