About Dr. Popovitz
Born in Ukraine and raised in New York, Dr. Leon E. Popovitz, MD, FAAOS is the co-founder of New York Bone and Joint Specialists and an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon. He has lectured and presented his surgical techniques and clinical research across Europe and the Americas, and his work in arthroscopic surgery and joint preservation has been recognized by orthopedic societies on multiple continents. He is fluent in Russian. Internationally recognized for his expertise in arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery, Dr. Popovitz specializes in the minimally invasive repair and reconstruction of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and the critical structural elements of both joints. His treatment philosophy is preservation-first: the native joint structures we are born with are worth protecting, and surgery is the right answer when it is the right answer, not the default answer.
Dr. Popovitz trained at some of the most distinguished institutions in orthopedic surgery. He earned his MD from New York Medical College after completing the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education program. His orthopedic surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital included additional rotations at Harvard Children’s Hospital in Boston and at Cornell/Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He completed a fellowship in Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Medicine at NYU Langone / Hospital for Joint Diseases — the fellowship that defined the technical foundation of his surgical practice.
He currently serves as an Attending Surgeon in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital within the Northwell Health system. In academic medicine, he holds the title of Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell — one of the leading academic medical centers in the New York metropolitan region — and serves as a Clinical Instructor in Orthopedic Surgery at CUNY School of Medicine, where he lectures to medical students during their surgical rotations. He has served as team physician at the US Open Tennis Championships, providing on-site orthopedic and sports medicine care to professional athletes competing at the highest level of international sport. He speaks English and Russian.
