Munif Hussain, DO, MS, CAQSM is an innovative member of the New York Bone and Joint Specialists’ Sports Medicine team. Dr. Hussain is a board-certified sports medicine physician who treats patients with musculoskeletal disorders of varied ages and athletic abilities, ranging from professional wrestlers and elite marathon runners to recreational sports enthusiasts. 

He is a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive non-surgical procedural treatment options for multiple musculoskeletal disorders, providing state-of-the-art, ultrasound-guided injections. Dr. Hussain’s experience includes trauma/fracture care, concussions, arthritis, overuse disorders, upper and low back strains, and other non-sports related injuries to the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, thigh, knee, foot, and ankle. In his practice, he uses various healing agents such as prolotherapy/sclerotherapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP), regenerative stem cell derivatives, hyaluronic acid (HA), and corticosteroids. 

Dr. Hussain has practiced in various outpatient settings, ranging from multispeciality to hospital-based care. He has improved the quality of life for many patients locally in the New York City and Long Island area, as well as internationally in the Middle East, Europe, and South Asia. 

“I try to exhaust evidence-based, well-studied treatment options for my patients before they have to consider surgery,” Dr. Hussain says. “It is humbling to treat the friends and family of patients from all over.”

Dr. Munif Hussain will prescribe customized, comprehensive physical therapy and rehabilitative programs for his patients. He uses his powerful network of physicians, physical therapists, and imaging specialists to aid in treatment plans for challenging, complex cases. 

“I truly practice as an osteopathic clinician,” Dr. Hussain said. “I look at the patient as a whole, and am motivated by getting a patient back to their quality of life.”

Medical Training and Professional Recognition

Dr. Hussain is well-recognized among his peers as an educator and mentor. In 2017, Dr. Hussain served as a teaching associate in the clinical department of Emergency Medicine/Sports Medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, where he taught musculoskeletal ultrasounds of the upper and lower extremities. 

His research on hypertension and body mass index appeared in the June 2019 edition of The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. He has also presented clinical cases at the podium for the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM)conference. As a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM), Dr. Hussain has also completed advanced-level musculoskeletal ultrasound courses.

Personal Life  

Dr. Hussain continues to remain active as an expert in exercise medicine, strengthening and conditioning, and working closely with athletes throughout their lives. He’s served as a sideline physician for ringside Olympic-style boxing with USA Boxing, various professional wrestling and kickboxing tournaments, Muay Thai UFC Fight Nights, NYRR NYC Marathons, half marathons, 5k races, Tough Mudder events, and Ironman competitions. Dr. Hussain, a loving father and partner, travels with his family for team sports including football and soccer, running, and combat sports. He also plays bass and electric guitar for leisure.
