What Is Flat Back Syndrome?
You may think that you are holding your spine straight when you practice good posture. The truth is, our spine needs two major curves to give us balance and mobility. Our lumbar spine curves inward, which is called lordosis, while our thoracic spine curves outward, called kyphosis. While it’s always important to sit up straight, there are some patients who’s backs are too straight. Patients with flat back syndrome have lost lordosis due to an injury or spinal condition.
- Chronic fatigue
- Achiness in the hips, groin, or thighs
- Stopping forward posture
- Lack of balance
- Degenerative disk disease/arthritis
- Precious back surgery – older surgical methods for correcting scoliosis commonly caused flat back syndrome
Treatment options for flat back syndrome vary for each individual.
For those cases that do not seriously hinder daily life, physical therapy can be very effective. Under professional guidance you can improve your gate and realign the muscles and then vertebrae of your spine to a more functional position. Pain management techniques, like corticosteroid injections, are often helpful during this process. For severe cases of flat back syndrome, surgery may be necessary.
