What is PRP Therapy?

While already commonly used in orthopedics, platelet-rich plasma therapy (or PRP) is becoming an increasingly popular treatment option for procedures tied to hair loss and facial rejuvenation. The therapy is based on the fact that our blood is composed of two main components: red blood cells and plasma containing white blood cells, proteins, and platelets. Those platelets are critical to the body's growth and healing. To obtain the platelet-rich plasma that's used in PRP therapy, blood is taken from the patient and the red blood cells are separated from the plasma using a centrifuge. The resulting platelet-rich plasma is then reinjected into the patient using either microneedling and/or targeted injections. There are no outside chemicals or medications involved in PRP therapy, making it an all-natural, organic procedure. PRP therapy works because the platelet-rich plasma that's reinjected stimulates the growth of new, healthy cells, stimulating hair follicles and inducing collagen production.
