Leon E. Popovitz, MD is the co-founder of New York Bone & Joint Specialists and a top-rated orthopedic surgeon in New York City. Internationally recognized for his expertise in arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery, Dr. Popovitz specializes in the minimally invasive repair and reconstruction of cartilage, ligaments, tendons and critical structures of the shoulder and knee.

His treatment philosophy is centered on preserving vital joint structures to promote long-term joint health and delay degeneration. Known for his innovative techniques, Dr. Popovitz has contributed to clinical research, surgical advancements and invention that help shape the future of orthopedic care.

Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Popovitz is also a member of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy. He has served as an orthopedic surgeon for the U.S. Open Tennis Championships and is proud to treat athletes of all levels with compassion and precision.

Born in the Ukraine and a graduate of the prestigious Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education in New York, Dr. Popovitz earned his MD from New York Medical College. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital, with additional training at Harvard Children’s Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering, followed by a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital.

He is currently an attending physician at Northwell/Lenox Hill Hospital and has been honored by numerous publications including The New York Times, New York Magazine, and Castle Connolly as a Top Doctor.
